Former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde Visits WISE for International Women’s Day

H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, Ethiopia’s first woman president, visited WISE in celebration of International Women’s Day. During her visit, she engaged with women at the grassroots level, listening to their stories of struggle, resilience, and success.

WISE members warmly welcomed her, expressing appreciation for her longstanding support. Many reflected on the difficult period during the COVID-19 pandemic, when businesses closed and families faced severe hardships. In response, H.E. Sahle-Work, in collaboration with the European Union, supported more than 4,700 WISE women with essential food and sanitary supplies.

Speaking at the event, she emphasized that the recognition and empowerment of women should extend beyond March 8 and be upheld every day of the year. She also shared insights from her own journey, highlighting the importance of breaking barriers in traditionally male-dominated leadership spaces and reaffirming her commitment to advancing women’s rights.

The visit concluded with her pledge to continue supporting and advocating for women’s empowerment. The event was sponsored by the former president.
